“Fighting Antisemitism in Education in Court”
Deena Margolies, staff attorney, at the Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law will examine how antiSemitism is manifesting itself in our educational institutions today, how does it present in practice and what are the legal tools available to address it? To answer these questions and more, Ms. Margolies will explain the role of federal civil rights laws - especially Title VI of the Civil Rights Act - in holding institutions accountable when they fail to address hostile environments.
She will also address the frequent - and often misunderstood - interplay between civil rights protections and the First Amendment. The talk will include real world examples from recent matters handled by the Brandeis Center.
Deena Margolies is a litigation staff attorney at the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law, where she plays a leading role in the Center’s civil rights enforcement and litigation strategy. Ms. Margolies is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Law, holds an LL.M. from Cardozo School of Law in intellectual property, and earned her undergraduate degree summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania.
